When you walk into a poker room, in the virtual world, or in the poker club, you have many choices available. The choice of the poker table you want to play on, and where you wish to sit on that specific poker table.
While for many players, the argument may be that the choice of seat is not very crucial in the final outcome of the game. During the course of each round of poker on the game table, it all balances out as everyone is given an equal opportunity to participate in the game and to raise the stakes per their game style. The shifting of the blinds in each deal itself keeps it balanced too. So does the choice of the seat actually make much of a difference? Let us find out:
What is the difference between a 2-handed or 6-handed or 9-handed poker table?
A 2 handed poker table, some might call it a 2-seat poker table, is a table that allows only 2 players to play at once. A 6-handed or 6-seater poker table allows only up to 6 players to play at a time, and so on.
A 2 handed table is also called a heads-up table, where in two opponents are literally going heads-up against each other in a game of poker one-upmanship. This is a game of pure bluff and player-reading skills, and very little probability comes into play here. It is often said that a 2 handed player is the true test of a poker player’s psychological skills.
A 6-handed or 6-seater table is the most regular format of the game, where the balance between the card probabilities and reading the gameplay of the opponent players is perfectly matched, and true prowess in one or more of these skills can make you a clear winner on the table.
A 9-handed table, is a table, where the probabilities get a little more skewed, and the best players here are the players the ones with the best probability reading skills, and little to no bluffing in the game in such a format too can make you a winning player.
(Please note that these are notes only for guidance purposes, and each poker player’s game style is different. It is possible to win big by bluffing on a full 9-handed table too, and so on. The idea is to drive home the point that the game styles are different across different-handed poker tables)
These are also assuming the idea of a full or a near-full table. For example, there could be just 2-3 players playing on a 6-handed poker table, and that game would mimic the characteristics of a heads-up table from time to time, till other players join the table.
In some other formats, you may also have 5-seater tables or 8-seater tables, though these configurations of poker tables are not entirely too common.
Which seat do I choose on the poker table?
As mentioned earlier, while this would not make too much of a difference in the course of the overall game session, you might still want to choose to optimize the seating based on the following pointers for example:
